Erik Engberg Bio
Erik Engberg is the Head of ADT Course Development with InDepth Training. Born on the island of Gotland in Sweden, he went through a solid schooling in natural sciences, computers and media and communications as well as a previous international career as an information security consultant and network/security trainer before taking up diving full time. He also did martial arts when growing up and holds about a dozen grades in different disciplines, and has helped instruct in the home club.
Erik was an avid free-diver and water sports activist for his whole life before finally taking up scuba diving, instantly adapting to it – but not satisfied at all by the training or procedures of leisure sport diving. Already being supremely comfortable in the water, he more or less immediately got into the realm of wreck penetration and technical diving. Erik cut his teeth on advanced diving and developed his in-water skills working as a full-time underwater videographer, which he later abandoned in favor of teaching tech, although he still continues to film - mostly for personal enjoyment and as a teaching methodology – and sometimes professionally. He has done more than 1500 video dives in total.
Since his “humble beginnings” (author’s own words – Ed.) in diving, Erik has since taken every possible chance to learn and develop himself and has since become a well-respected Technical Diving Instructor and Instructor Trainer for several agencies, as well as an avid Cave, Wreck and Rebreather diver, completely oriented towards advanced diving. He has also done more than 1100 dives deeper than 40 meters (130ft), dived in all kinds of environments, from the arctic to the tropics, fresh and saltwater, zero to 80 meter viz. His special passion is wreck and cave exploration and Erik has over 700 wreck penetration dives, including extensive explorations of the British battleships HMS Repulse (more than 150 dives on this wreck! Including leading the team who first entered the engine room) and HMS Prince of Wales.
Since 2004 Erik has resided in Malaysia with a comfortable job running technical diving operations – which he has now left in order to focus on InDepth Training, freelance instruction and mounting expeditions in the quiet (but watch internationally breaking news of a recent new find).
When dry, Erik reads, writes and dabbles in security, networking and website development for fun and profit.
